Subject verb agreement
It is important for the better something. If any
student can solve it properly they can set us the writing properly. It is made
him or her proper writer. So subject verb agreement is the greatest rules of
the students. At first they should the idea about the knowledge of the subject.
It is most important of the English language. So, early the students should
complete the lesson.
1. If
the subject is first person singular number=verb is too first person singular
number.> am, have, love , was
2. If
the subject is first person plural number=verb is too first person plural
number.> are, have, love , were
3. If
the subject is second person = verb is too first person plural number.> Are,
have, love , were
4. If
the subject is third person singular number= verb is too third person singular
number.> Is, has, loves, was.
5. If
the subject is third person plural number= verb is too third person plural
number.> Are, have, love, were.
6. If
two or more singular subject added with “and” = Using verb and pronoun will be
‘plural verb’.
7. If
two or more singular subject added with “and” direction the same person or
thing = using verb and pronoun will be ‘singular verb’.
8. If
the added noun with ‘and’ understand different person and thing for the reason
before the noun set up ‘the’= the verb will be plural.
9. If
the added noun with ‘and’ singular subject understand same person and thing =
the verb will be singular. My name and address is given below. Slow and steady
wins the race. Bread and butter is good for breakfast. The long and short of
the story is this. A hue and cry was raised at the dead of night. Different:
time and tied wait for none. Two and two make four.
10. Each/
every/ no + noun = verb and pronoun singular number. Every boy and every girl

11. Either
----or, neither ----- nor two or more singular subject = singular .Alim and
Alam has gone there. Either he or his brother respects for it. Neither sorrow
nor joy affects him.
12. If
different number subject ‘or, neither …… nor, either ……..or. With add after
that ‘verb’ must be plural and plural subject always is set the nearest verb.
Alim or his friends have gone there. Either he or his brothers are responsible
for it. Neither the headmaster nor the teachers were present in the meeting.
13. If
different persons subject add or, either …..Or, neither ….. Nor, then the verb
will be the nearest subject. He or they are guilty. Either you or I am wrong.
Neither you nor he is happy.
14. First
person, second person, third person = second person, third person, first
person, (shortly 231) and next verb plural number. You, he and I are happy. If
the sentence meaning of responsibility of bad thing. First person, second
person, third person (shortly = 123). I you and he are guilty.
15. By
Collective noun understand undivided group = verb singular. But divided many
persons = verb plural. The committee was unanimous in its decision. The
committee were unanimous in their opinions.
16. Some
adjective add’ the’ and it means plural common noun = verb plural. The rich are
not always happy. The poor are born to suffer. The peasantries of Bangladesh
are poor. The virtues are always happy. The cautious are not always coward.
17. Some
adjective add the’ and the meaning of the adjective as a singular subject =
verb singular. The future is unknown to us. The yellow of an egg is more
nutritious.
18. If
any things or country name add plural noun = according to subject ‘verb
singular’. The United Arab Emirates is a rich country. Gulliver’s Travels is an
interesting book.
19. If
any ‘infinitive, gerund, verbal noun, clause or phrase to set up as like
subject = verb singular. To tell lies is a great sin. Telling lies is a great
sin. The reading of history gives one knowledge. That he is a liar is known to
all. The normal function of the liver is to clean the body its poison.
20. If
any plural noun is added with singular subject; ‘with, along with, together
with, as well as, in addition to etc. = verb singular. A along with my friends
was present in the meeting. She together with her classmates intends to go on a
picnic. Rana as well as his brothers deserves praise.
21. Each
of, one of, either of, neither of, the use of, quality of, after that plural
noun = verb singular. Each of the boy is clever. One of my friends has come
just now. The quality of the mangoes was not good. The use of pesticides has
done more harm than good. Sabana is one of the girls who dances well. Neither
of my uncles is married.
22. If
the verb subject is relative pronoun, the relative pronoun’s verb according to
antecedent number and person of the sentences = verb. It is I who am to blame.
I, who am your friend, will guard your interests. He is one of the best boys
that have read in this school. You, who is my friends, should stand by me.
These are the books which have been bought. This is the book that has been
lost.
23. Note;
relative pronoun has different two ancedent verb will be the nearest
subject. I am the boy who helps the
poor. You are the person who speaks ill of others.
24. If Subject and complement are different number
= verb will be according to subject and mumber. What strikes me most there is
its beautiful buildings. Bangladesh need is houses at fair rents.
25. Anticipatory
‘it’ is used any number or gender and its noun use in own purpose = verb
singular. It was you who did this. It is those books that I want.
26. After
More than’ uses singular noun next verb will be singular and it use as plural
verb plural. More than one man was present there. More than two men were
present there.
27. Many
+ a/an + noun = verb singular. a / an +
great (noun plural) = verb plural. Many a man was present in the meeting. A
Great men were present there.
28.
Anybody,
anyone, no-one, nothing, nobody, somebody, someone, something, everyone,
everybody, everything, will be as a subject = verb will be singular. Everybody
loves an honest man. Something is better than nothing. Nobody believes a lair.
Everyone has called you there.
29. Distance,
weight, money, time, = verb singular. Twenty mile is a long distance. Fifty
kilos is a heavy weight. Thirty years is a long time. One million dollars is a
good amount of money.
30. Pair,
dozen, hundred, thousand, = verb singular. a pair of shoes is bought by him.
One dozen of apples is enough for us. A hundred of taka is needed to buy the
book. A thousand of taka is not a big amount.
31. Aristocracy,
cattle, poultry, people, peasantry, gentry are singular = verb plural. Cattle
are grazing in the field. The peasantries of our country are poor. The gentry
of our society were present in the meeting. People are running to and fro. The
aristocracy have lost their influence.
32. News,
mathematics physics, gallows, politics, are seems to plural = singular. Ill
news runs fast. Mathematics is my favourite subject. Physics is an interesting
subject. Politics is a dirty thing.
33. Arithmetical
operations = singular verb. Five plus five is ten. Five minus five is zero.
Five time five is twenty five. Five divided five is one.
