Narrraion and Transformation




1.      Rewrite the following in the reported speech.
“When will you start for Dhaka and why?” said father. “Tomorrow, to buy some essential books,” said Ratna. “What do you require? Only money?” Yes, father.” “Don’t go alone. Now time is not going well. Take Tapan with you and come back soon.” “Yes, father. We will come back before noon.”

2.      Read the following passage and transform the underlined sentences as directed.
(a)    Nazneen is a girl of very shy nature (Complex). (b) She cannot talk to her parents for their business (Compound). (c) She cannot visit her friends because there is want of safety (Simple). (d) To her there is no problem as serious as loneliness (Comparative). (e) She is not very often seen outside home (Affirmative).

3.      Rewrite the following in the reported speech.
“What’s a puppet show?” Sabu asked his Father said, “Let’s go inside and you can see for yourself.” Inside the tent Sabu said, “ How strange! A doll is dancing and talking!” Father said, “A man behind the screen is moving the doll. Do you understand who is talking?”

4.      Read the following passage and transform the underlined sentences as directed in brackets.
Jim Corbet was a famous hunter. (a) Jim had a habit of mimicking the sound of different animals and birds (Make it complex). (b) When the animals heard the sound of their own species, he shot it at once (Simple). (c) An Indian hunter told that Jim Corbet had a tendency to show such kind of behaviour (Compound). (d) He visited many dangerous forests for hunting (Passive). (e) He was one of the most important hunters in the world (Positive).

5.      Rewrite the following passage in the reported speech.
“Why are you putting up the food in your pocket, sir? Why don’t you eat?” asked the noble man. “I am doing the right thing. My dress deserves these rich disches,” replied Sheikh Saadi. “I don’t understand what you mean to say,” said the noble man. “And I’m sorry.”
6.      Read the following passage in the reported speech.

(a) Learning a language is similar to riding a bicycle (Negative). (b) Communication is the most important thing about any language (Comparative). (c) One can communicate with others by using a language (Complex). (d) Certainly one can learn a language through mistakes (Passive). (e) People should not laugh when other make mistakes (Simple).



 Answer:
1.      Changing the form of speech
Father asked Ratna when and why he (R) would start for Dhaka. Ratna replied that he (R) would start for Dhaka the following day to buy some essential books. Then father asked him which things he (R) needed and also asked if it was only money. Ratna replied in the affirmative. Hearing his reply father forbade him to go alone because time was not going well then. He (f) advised him (R) to take Tapan with him (R) and come back soon. Ratna agreed and said that they would come back before noon.
2.      Transformation of sentences
a)      It is Nazneen who is a girl of very shy nature.
Or, Nazneen is a girl who is very shy in nature.
b)      Her parents are busy and so she cannot talk to them.
c)      She cannot visit her friends for want of her safety.
d)      Loneliness is more serious than any another problem to her.
e)      She is very often confined inside home.
3.      Changing the form of speech
Sabu asked his father what a puppet show was. Father proposed to Sabu that they should go inside and told him that he could see for himself. Inside the Sabu exclaimed with wonder that it was very strange that a doll was dancing and talking. Father said that a man behind the screen was moving the doll. Father asked Sabu if he understood who was talking.
4.      Transformation of sentences
a)      It is Jim who had a habit of mimicking the sound of different animals and birds.
b)      At the time of the animal’s hearing the sound of their own species, he shot it at once.
c)      Jim Corbet had a tendency to show such a kind of behaviour and an Indian hunter told this.
d)      Many dangerous forests were visited by him for hunting.
e)      Very few hunters in the words were as important as he.
5.      Changing the form of speech
The noble man respectfully asked Sheikh Saadi why he (s) was putting up the food in his (s) pocket and again he asked why he did not eat. Sheikh Saadi replied that he (s) was doing the right thing and added that his (s) dress deserved those rich dishes. The noble man said that he (n) did not understand what he (s) meant to say and added that he was sorry.          
6.      Transformation of sentences
a)      Learning a language is not dissimilar to riding a bicycle.
b)      Communication is more important than any other thing about a language.
c)      One can communicate with others when one uses a language.
d)      Certainly a language can be learnt through mistakes.
e)      People should not laugh at the time of others’ making mistakes.
